my love affair with wilco

it's no secret to friends that i love wilco. love them. they aren't at the beatles level for me, but they are close. as weird as they can be, to me they can do no wrong. their new album is no exception.
i fell in love with them listening to their album SUMMEREETH on repeat when i was 21, just out of college, partying all night, smoking too much pot and just a little depressed because i couldn't find a "real" job. it's no wonder they wrote and recorded the album a little strung out and depressed themselves. that album just resonated with me and always will.
i walked down the aisle to "remember the mountain bed" an exquisite song written by woody guthrie that still gives me chills. it's a song in which you can feed off the emotion and really immerse yourself in the lyrics, just a sampling:

There in the shade and hid from the sun we freed our minds and learned
Our greatest reason for being here, our bodies moved and burned
There on our mountain bed of leaves we learned life's reason why
The people laugh and love and dream, they fight, they hate to die

The smell of your hair I know is still there, if most of our leaves are blown
Our words still ring in the brush and the trees where singing seeds are sown
Your shape and form is dim but plain, there on our mountain bed
I see my life was brightest where you laughed and laid your head...

papa was a rodeo

awesome bright eyes cover of a magnetic fields song. i love bright eyes. once i was listening to his cd and trav asked "who is this whiner?!" i can't deny his music might be a little whiny sometimes, but i still love him.

did anyone see the sky tonight?

it was pink and grey and beautiful. i was running and it made me go a little bit further so i could just stare at it and breathe in the summer air.
it's things like the pink sky that make me step back and really count my life's blessings.
and it of course made me think of the two exquisite songs by nick drake "pink moon" and "northern sky."
and then i thought about my real true life's blessings, luci and trav.

from "northern sky"
"I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky."

"And the greatest gift of life is to know love"

sometimes all it takes is a song to make you feel better. calmer. good.
just heard one of my favorite, more obscure indigo girls songs "all that we let in."
great, telling LYRICS.
it's no secret i'm a huge indigo girls fan. they are just so great.

don't worry, bout a thing

i love THIS cd. it's one of the best for kids i've found.
i've taken to singing two songs from it to lu when i put her down at night.
1. "three little birds"- their remake of bob marley's classic (love it)
and
2. "powder blue" - just simply beautiful.
check out this sweet little video for another song "it's a big world."
i promise if you buy this cd you will love it as much as i do.

the promise reincarnate

took my mom to tracy chapman last night for her birthday. amazing show. i've seen her five times now i think and she's just great each and every time.
she's famous for "fast car" and "give me one reason", but her catalog of songs goes so much deeper than those songs alone.
my two fave cd's of hers- her debut "tracy chapman" and "new beginning" can be listened the entire way through. just perfection.
although i love her song "the promise," i'd buried it away in my memory because it was a song i shared with an old boyfriend. you know, "our song." however, i was 19 and that was a long time ago so it's about time i brought it back to the front of my mind to appreciate. it really is a beautiful love song. and that ex boyfriend was a nice guy, so no need to press stop on the song forever.
tracy plays for minivan moms and for an array of personalities in between. love her.

butterfly nets

when i first heard this song a few years ago on 88.9 fm the impact, i paused. then i immediately drove home and downloaded it and put it on my annual christmas mix. that was in 2006.
"butterfly nets" was the first bishop allen song i fell in love with. it's quite different than some of their other stuff. it's all really great though.

if you like "butterfly nets" you have to check out "things are what you make of them," "rain," "like castanets" and "ghosts are good company." all AWESOME songs.
